Call for short films! (French-, Spanish-, and Italian-language)

Vista Higher Learning, Inc. is an educational publishing company based in Boston, MA in the United States. We publish foreign language (French, Spanish, and Italian) textbooks for use in the American and Canadian college and high school markets. A key feature of our programs is the inclusion of short films as learning tools; they serve to showcase the culture of different countries and communities and to encourage students to use the language that they have learned. We first had success with this concept in Spanish and have since repeated that success in French. We are currently working on our first project in Italian.

We are constantly looking for short films for new programs and for revisions to existing programs. If you have short films that you would like to submit for consideration, we would love the opportunity to see them.

Here are some basic criteria:

1. All films must have dialogue.

2. All films must be in French, Italian or Spanish. No regional dialects, but regional accents are fine.

3. All films should be no longer than approximately 30 minutes, with some flexibility.

If a film is selected for use in one of our programs, we will be in contact with the copyright holders to negotiate the conditions of use and to sign a contract.

To give an idea of the type of films that we are looking for, some of the works that we have featured in our French text are the following:

J’attendrai le suivant… by Philippe Orreindy, Émilie Muller by Yvon Marciano, La révolution des crabes by Arthur de Pins, De l’autre côté by Nassim Amaouche, and L’homme qui plantait des arbres by Frédéric Back.

Here are some of the titles that have appeared in our Spanish texts:

El ojo en la nuca by Rodrigo Plá, Éramos pocos by Borja Cobeaga, Viaje a Marte by Juan Pablo Zaramella, and Diez minutos by Alberto Ruiz Rojo.

Films submitted should preferably be on DVD, in NTSC format, and with English subtitles. If this is not possible, PAL version and films without subtitles will be accepted. (VHS can be accepted if absolutely necessary.)

Please send all submissions to:

The Just For Laughs Film Festival wants your comedy short!

The Just For Laughs Film Festival is the premiere film event of the Montreal International Just For Laughs Comedy Festival which attracts over 2 million visitors and over 1,000 industry members each summer. This film extravaganza showcases the world’s largest selection of comedy shorts , Hollywood and International film premieres, and a series of star-studded special events. Since 1997, the Eat My Shorts Series and it's offshoot, Eat My Twisted Shorts have been screening the very best of the funniest short films from around the world.

What we look for in a comedy short film is any film that uses any of the many aspects of comedy (from slapstick to absurdity; irreverence to irony; silliness to wit and everything in between) to effectively communicate their message (which may well be a serious one) or inspire, empower or otherwise elevate and entertain their audience. We take our comedy seriously.

In 2008, the Just For Laughs Film Festival screened over 135 short films from 16 countries maintaining its status as the largest comedic short film Festival in the World.

The Just For Laughs Festival is the prime opportunity to present your film to key industry members, Canadian and International media, and true film and comedy fans. Many high-profile local and international distributors (including Universal Pictures, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, SONY, Columbia Pictures, Alliance Atlantis VivaFilm, Christal Films, Remstar, Gaumont, Mirimax, The Weinstein co., TF1 and more) have used the Just For Laughs Film Festival in the past to premiere films to a huge Canadian and International press that attends and covers our Festival, and to search out the best new voices in cinema today.
