Description: The Pioneer Theater's weekly short film competition, the Short Film Slam, is now accepting submissions. A short film competition modeled after the poetry slam, the Short Film Slam offers you the opportunity to screen your film before the public on the big screen, without submission fees, screening committees or red tape.
The show takes place each and every Sunday at 5PM.
At the end of each show, the audience votes for a winning film, which then receives further screenings at the Pioneer Theater!
Submission guidelines are as follows:
-Films must be 30 minutes or less in length.
-Films can be in the following formats: 35mm, 16mm, BetaSP, VHS, DVD. (If you need to screen in another format, you must be able to provide your own deck or camera)
-In order to win, a film must both: a) receive a majority of votes and b) receive at least 5 votes.
-Filmmaker must agree to abide by the vote count and to the screening schedule determined by the Pioneer.
-Filmmakers are welcome to come back to the Slam as often as they wish, but the same film cannot be shown more than twice.
-The same film cannot be shown two weeks in a row.
There are three ways to submit your film:
1) The best way is to e-mail greg@twoboots.com to sign up. If you sign up via e-mail, please wait for confirmation from the Pioneer before assuming that you have a slot in the competition!
2) You can also call Greg at 212-254-7107 Monday-Friday from 2 to 8.
3) Lastly, you can stop by the Pioneer Theater DURING OPERATION HOURS and sign up directly. Just tell the person at the counter that you’d like to sign up for the Slam, and they will help you find the next available date.
In all cases, you will be asked to provide the following information:
Name(s) of director(s)
Name of film
Contact information (phone # and e-mail)
Running time
Format
Once you are signed up, all you need to do is bring your film on the day of the screening by 4:30pm.
General Guidelines:
-Since the winning film is chosen by audience vote (and since a minimum of five votes is required to win), it’s in your best interests to promote your screening and get a group of friends to attend (as long as they’re loyal!). The more people you can bring with you, the better your chances of winning. It’s also more fun for everyone to screen their films before a large audience.
-If you know you have a large group attending, advise them to get to the screening early. The Slam often sells out, and we cannot hold seats except for directors.
-An admission fee of $5 will be charged for everyone not listed as a director. We’re sorry, but this includes actors, crew and caterers as well! Just remember, your money is going toward a good cause – getting the film you put so much work into shown before a wider audience.
-It’s a good idea to bring a VHS backup of your film in case there are any problems with your print or tape, in order to ensure that your film will be screened.
-Ballots are collected and counted right after the screening ends. The Pioneer will accept only one ballot per person. The winner will be announced as soon as all ballots are counted, and will also be posted on our website and sent out in our weekly e-mail.
-If your film wins, you will be notified when your screening will take place. Winning films will be screened at a special "Tuesdays @ 8" show. (For more information on "Tuesdays @ 8," click here.)
