Advice to Filmmakers: Clearance of music rights or music-related issues seem to be the biggest hurdle to overcome for independent short films when they decide to distribute them. Many times, filmmakers will make a film thinking that his/her only outlet will be festivals and so they use main stream music that is very difficult or expensive to clear when it comes time for distribution. They are surprised when they meet companies like ours that want to try and sell their films and then are faced with the problem of either re-scoring the film or going through the labor intensive (and expensive) process of seeking out music clearances for their music. So please try and use original music from the start. For filmmakers using the latest in DV such as the Canon XL1 or Sony platform, please focus on proper lighting. It is possible to have a well-shot film on DV that can sell to cable or airlines, however, it is usually the poor lighting that makes DV stick out like a sore thumb. So if you are going to use DV instead of film, get a decent lighting package and do a test shoot to make sure it doesn't end up looking like a home video.
